Amanda Jane Graham

Artist · Sociologist · Artist-Researcher · Former Hairstylist

I am a Scottish-born Irish artist, sociologist, and art researcher investigating the overlooked yet significant connections among hairdressing, art history, and visual culture. Drawing on twenty-four years of experience as a hairstylist, I combine art practice with sociological and historical research to examine creative labour, expertise, and the cultural contribution of hairdressing. 

Research: The Third Eye

As an apprentice hairdresser, I was taught that the mirror is my third eye. It gives a unique perspective of a client’s hair, one they cannot possibly see themselves, and allows robust communication while looking them directly in the eyes.

This way of observing and communicating has very naturally shaped my artistic practice.  I examine historical portraiture from a hairdressing perspective. When researching historical art, I see not only the artist and sitter but also all collaborators, and I ask why their expertise has been sidelined by art history.

Biography

Graham’s most recent solo exhibitions include the Lab Gallery (Dublin, 2026), the Whitaker Museum (UK, 2026), the Leitrim Sculpture Centre and the Royal Dublin Convention Centre (2024), Birr Castle and the Irish Architectural Archive (2023), Dock Arts Centre (2019), and the RHA in Dublin (2017). In 2026, she received a research bursary from Longford County Council and looks forward to commencing the Townhall Studio Award from Cavan County Council in 2027. In 2025, her exhibition The Coiffured received support from Culture Ireland. She was awarded a Leitrim Art Award in 2023 and was also a finalist for the Sir John Soane Drawing Office Residency and the Business to Arts Best Creativity in the Workplace Award. Other awards include the Creative Ireland Creative Communities Economic Action Fund (2022), the Platform 31 Bursary (2021), the Spark Residency Award, the Arts Council of Ireland Bursary, and the Agility Award.
